Go Green
“We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children”
We are proud that our Company pays no dividends or annual bonuses to any investors/owners. Instead, the profits that the company makes is used for three main purposes; tree planting, land maintenance and improvement, and land acquisition.
Tree Planting
Every year, with the help of volunteers, the company plants literally thousands of native Scottish broadleaves in the area surrounding the plots for sale. The destruction of our native forests, which at one time covered most of Scotland, has taken place over the last thousand years, and native woodland cover is now only about 1% of Scotland. We see it as imperative that we conserve the biodiverse forest that remains, that we replace some of the trees that have been lost, for the sake of wildlife habitat, carbon sequestration, and the enjoyment of future generations. We also plant trees that customers have sponsored through our website.
Land Maintenance and Improvement
We spend money every year on the upkeep of the land, on new fences, signposts, footpaths and maintenance of the car parking area. In addition to this we strive to make Glencoe Wood accessible for all by restoring existing tracks and creating new footpaths and bridleways. We now have a fantastic route that is clearly signposted, takes in many natural beauty spots, and allows visitors to the land to explore further afield. The track will also allow disabled and elderly visitors the opportunity to see more than they otherwise could. We hope to add to the network of tracks in the future.
Land Acquisition
The reason that we purchased the current land is that it was on the edge of Duror village, overlooking Loch Linnhe, close to amenities…. In other words we were concerned that it may one day become developed. By acquiring this land and selling it in small plots to literally hundreds of different people we can ensure that it can never be purchased by a building company and become just another housing estate. We are constantly saving all the profit from the land sales in order to “rescue” another similar woodland one day.
Glen Etive and Glen Fyne SPA for Golden Eagles
The Glen Etive and Glen Fyne SPA regularly supports a population of Golden Eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) of European importance and with 19 active territories in 2003 it represents a significant percentage of Scotland's total population of these endangered birds.
Fund raising in 2011 has enabled us to realise the dream of acquiring a 500 acre tract of land close to Glencoe Wood and wholly within the Glen Etive and Glen Fyne Special Protection Area. This will enable us to help protect and conserve Scotland's iconic bird of prey, the Golden Eagle. This protected area, to be known as the Highland Titles Nature Reserve, is a large predominantly upland site, rising from sea level to over 1100m. It encompasses a diverse range of habitats including heather moorland, rough grassland, blanket bog, native woodland, montane heaths and exposed rock and scree. There are also freshwater lochans and streams.
Funding for this Nature Reserve has come directly from all our Lairds, but we must pay tribute here to the support that we have received in 2011 from Australia.
