Update from the Reserve – July 2018

Written by: Stewart Borland

July has been a fantastically busy time for us at the Reserve, mid-summer, and with the weather being warmer and drier, a lot of the Lairds, Lords and Ladies are visiting their plots at this time. In this month’s update, we introduce you to the team of volunteers that make these guided tours possible; moreover, we bring you one of our most exciting news updates ever: the rescue of two Scottish Wildcat Kittens and their rehabilitation in our sanctuary!

Meet the Team

Managing our Nature Reserves, Glencoe Wood and Mountain View, can be hard work – from physically-demanding yet rewarding conservation and restoration work to our much-loved meet and greet service and guided tours. Such work is only possible given the fantastic Highland Titles team, a bunch of hard-working and amazing volunteers, who all share our vision to conserve Scotland, one square foot at a time™!

Our latest addition to the team has been Andy, on the far left on the picture above, who has recently joined us after spending the last year volunteering with World Horizons, in Wales. After also spending some time in North Africa, he has returned to Ballachulish, where he has previously worked in the Outdoor Centre in Glencoe for a couple of years. Next to Andy is David, who some of you might know from his popular tours and lovely comments on TripAdvisor, and next to David is Heather, who we are delighted to welcome back for the Summer, having just finished her first year at St Andrews University. On Heather’s right side is Fiona, who takes care of Reception and retail sales, and finally me, Estate Factor or Manager of our Reserves, a mixture of everything and the regular photographer on the reserve!

We hope you give a big welcome to Andy and a welcome back to Heather, and an overall round of applause to all the volunteers for their outstanding work at the Reserve!

Scottish Wildcat Kittens Rescued

When we first gifted part our Mountain View Nature Reserve to create a wildcat haven, we never expected to have two orphaned wildcat kittens staying over so soon. Earlier this month, a member of the public reported seeing Scottish Wildcat Kittens in the West Highlands to our partners at Wildcat Haven. A team of specialists was put in place, and they quickly found the kittens, weak and dehydrated. After confirming that no mother was looking for them, they were taken to the vet, where they were monitored for 48 hours, before they could be brought to the sanctuary at our Reserve. The kittens will be staying in our enclosure until they are old enough to be released into the wild – where they rightfully belong.

We are so incredibly happy and excited about seeing our purpose-built enclosure being used to rehabilitate this fantastic species and to be the home of the feline siblings, who are happily enjoying their own acre of fenced forest.

If You’re Visiting…

We are always happy to escort all Lairds, Lords and Ladies to their plots, while showing all the conservation work in the Reserve. However, it is important to note that even if you have purchased the Meet and Greet service, you still need to actually book an appointment for your tour. The purchase of the ticket alone does not secure a space – so make sure you book your tour in advance!

The Ultimate Glencoe Itinerary

If you are planning to visit the Reserve and want to get the unforgettable Glencoe experience, but are unsure on what else to include in your travel plans – don’t worry, we have done it for you! We have compiled the ultimate 2-day itinerary to Glencoe with a top selection of entertainment, activities, accommodation, restaurants and more. Check the itinerary here!

Clip of The Month: Scottish Wildcat Kittens

The Scottish Wildcat Kittens have settled in wonderfully in our sanctuary, and this month’s clip shows the cute kittens experiencing rabbit, a staple food for Scottish wildcats, for the first time. Dr. Paul O’Donoghue, the Chief Scientific Advisor at Wildcat Haven, has proclaimed that the kittens’ markings are amazing and better than any kitten he has seen in a zoo. Check it out for yourself and let us know what you think!

Looking forward to August?

August will bring us the Summer Bank Holiday and, as always, we will bring you a fresh-new reserve update. Come back next month as we will give you an update on the Scottish Wildcat Kittens and share with you the pictures from this year’s Gathering, our Lords, Ladies and Lairds get-together in early May. In the meantime, if you come by the Reserve – make sure to say hello (and book your Meet & Greet in advance)!
