The backstory to ‘The Boys’
They were born on 1st March 2024 and they are twins.
It was a very shaky start as Mum was a ‘first-time calver’ and it turned out she did not have enough milk for the boys and just left them. Shannon, who used to work at the Reserve, had to take them in as orphans.

The story so far…

Day 1
They were so weak that one especially, looked as if it might die. They were palced under a heat lamp overnight and tube-fed colostrum.
Colostrum is vital to the newborn calf because it contains antibodies (also known as immunoglobulins, or IgG), which provide immunity. It is also rich in energy and nutrients that are essential for growth. For a good start in life, dairy calves need quality colostrum as their first feed.
Day 2
The next morning they were up and looking much more lively, they just got better and better from then onwards! They were fed with a calf milk replacer powder.
Day 3 onwards
Initially, they were fed 4 times a day with 1.5 litres each for 3 weeks.
They also had ab lib hay (always available) and calf nuts.
For the next 2 weeks they had 2 litres each, 3 times a day.
By week 6 it was 2.5 litres each, twice a day for 2 weeks.
And they finished off with one 2.5 litre feed a day each for 2 weeks.
Week 12
At around 12 weeks old, the coos were off to Highland Titles Nature Reserve at Duror, where their next chapter begins!
